The Swingin' Surf Rock Shindig - Episode 31 "WITW 17: Japan"

The Japanese "Eleki" style (Japanese English for electric, as in electric guitars) has it's own unique, fast and frantic sound that is instantly recognizable, and stands out as it's own sub genre of surf and instro music. Inspired by The Ventures 1962 tour of the worlds 4th largest island nation, thousands of Japanese teenagers picked up the guitar and formed combos of their own, some of which went on to rival the fame of their idols and in the case of Yuzo Kayama, even go on to be covered by The Ventures themselves. Even today the country boasts hundreds of Ventures cover bands.

The 145,126 islands that make up Nippon clock in with nearly 22,000 miles of coastline, it's no surprise that great surf conditions can be found, and The typhoon season from September to October is where it's at. Grab your Mosrite, wax up your board and dive in!
