WAR (part 2)

On today’s show we will try to answer that eternal question –“War…what is it good for?” Many musicians like Gene Autry, John Coltrane, John Fogerty, MC Hammer, Johnny Cash, Maynard Keenan and G. C. Cameron of the Spinners, all served in the United States military. Some, like Tony Bennett, saw brutal combat before beginning a successful music career. After recording the song “Tighten up” the R & B singer Archie Bell was drafted into the US Army and began serving in Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he was shot in the leg and the song “Tighten Up,” went to #1 while he was in a military hospital –trying to convince people the song on the radio was his!  Today is the anniversary of Chief Pontiac’s War—a Native American Indian rebellion that witnessed one of the earliest incidents of germ warfare used by British colonial forces against Native Americans. It is also the anniversary of the French defeat in Vietnam at Dien Bien Phu as well as the anniversary of the end of the U.S. war in Vietnam which was officially declared over by Gerald Ford on this date, May 7, 1975.
