The Sam Jones Centennial Broadcast will be a historical survey of the music of the great bassist, Sam Jones from his earliest jump blues recordings in the early 1950s until the end of his life in 1981. His 30-year career provides a great way to hear the transitions in modern jazz and his music is marked by several long collaborations with some of the masters of American jazz: Cannonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson, Cedar Walton, and Billy Higgins. We will listen to at least one track from each of his approximately 300 recording sessions which include some of the most important albums in history, paying attention to both his bass playing and how he interacts with the other musicians around him, especially drummers. Tune in for a deep dive into the classic jazz period and some in-depth analysis of this great music!
